Wireless M-Bus receivers: state of the art receivers with radio communication

In a metering infrastructure, it is the job of wireless M-Bus receivers to receive signals from M-Bus consumption meters securely and in encrypted form, and to then process these. Wireless models are based on radio technology and enable secure, reliable and cost-effective remote meter reading.

No cables: data transfer with wireless M-Bus receivers

The technology behind wireless M-Bus receivers is called Wireless M-Bus. It is the wireless alternative to conventional M-Bus technology, which has established itself as the standard for remote meter reading for water, electricity, gas and heating.

Wireless M-Bus receivers receive and communicate data on an unlicensed frequency band, allowing for medium range and physical penetration

Wireless M-Bus receivers reach maximum functionality through the use of filters and amplifiers, which are available in Elvaco’s Enhanced series. These increase the reception sensitivity, thereby significantly increasing the reception range. By using a wireless M-Bus repeater, the range of the meters can also be optimised in difficult installation situations.

In many cases, using Wireless M-Bus is more practical than the wired alternative. For example, when retrofitting a building or reading meter data in large areas with many buildings, this technology requires much less organisation and lower costs.

What are the advantages of wireless M-Bus receivers?

Within the wireless M-Bus infrastructure, the wireless M-Bus receiver is a key element, receiving and processing meter data. These models offer numerous advantages

  • cost-effective, as there is no need to wire the devices
  • practical and easy to install
  • long service life (more than 10 years) thanks to low power consumption through the use of an efficient radio protocol
  • maximum compatibility thanks to an interface regulated by an EN standard.

Maximum compatibility for cost-efficient operation

Wireless M-Bus receivers, mounted on a DIN rail, can be easily connected to a wide variety of Elvaco products, from meters to masters, thanks to an IR interface. The interface and communication protocol are regulated by an EN standard, meaning that devices from different manufacturers can also be easily incorporated into needs-based systems.

As wireless M-Bus receivers do not require any cabling, you also save costs. At the same time, you can still take advantage of the numerous benefits offered by established M-Bus technology for remote meter reading.

Wireless M-Bus receiver FAQs

What is Wireless M-Bus?

Wireless M-Bus is the wireless alternative to conventional, wired M-Bus technology and is the state of the art in smart metering. It uses wireless devices based on radio technology, which often prove to be more cost-effective and practical.

How does a wireless M-Bus receiver work?

A wireless M-Bus receiver reads data from the wireless M-Bus meters connected to it using radio technology on an unlicensed frequency band, such as 868 MHz or 434 MHz. These signals are then processed to become useable meter data.
